Spring is Coming!

After a wet, slushy winter, who doesn’t look forward to spring? Bostonians certainly do. But some of us look forward to spring more than others: TPC Grantee Mill City Grows, a Lowell-based organization that grows fresh, healthy food; new member Farida Kathawalla, who looks forward to accompanying her grant team members on Site Visits next month; and TPC’s Membership Engagement Committee, which has been hard at work creating new opportunities for our members to connect.

Mill City Grows

For our Grantee spotlight this month, TPC member Susanne Beck interviewed Lydia Sisson, the founding co-director of Mill City Grows (MCG). MCG increases community access to healthy, fresh food through the development of urban food production and distribution networks.

Q: Tell me a little about yourself and how you came to found MCG.

I first got into farming when I was in college at Vassar. After college, I went WWOOFing (willing workers on organic farms) in Europe and loved it. When I came back to the US, I took a job in Lowell working with UTEC in what was then their farming program. In pretty quick succession, I apprenticed at Green Meadows Farm and then started my own community supported agriculture farm in North Reading. (READ MORE…)

Member Anne Manning caught up with new member Farida Kathawalla, to see what she’s gotten out of her membership so far. A lot!

Q: Farida, please tell us about yourself.

I am an accountant and I have lived all over the world. I have moved nine times! When I came back to the US in 2010, I re-evaluated my life; I wanted to figure out my passion. After living in so many places, including developing countries, I decided I wanted to do something to give back. I knocked on a lot of doors, asked a lot of questions, and ultimately made a huge change. I work with global non-profits now, raising money for organizations outside the US. My focus is empowering women and lower-resourced folks who don’t have a chance for a better life. I work on projects relating to women’s empowerment and newborn survival and health. (READ MORE…)
