TPC Co-Presidents’ Message
“Systems change is about advancing equity by shifting the conditions that hold the problem in place” John Kania, et. al.
At TPC, we think of systems change as work that aims to shift the root causes of social issues, rather than simply alleviating their symptoms. Last summer, an ad-hoc group of board members proposed the above as a working definition of systemic change to guide us.
TPC members deeply value the essential role of organizations primarily providing life sustaining direct services. These nonprofits are on the front lines, offering critical support, stability, and relief to individuals and families impacted by systemic inequities. Many of our applicants indeed do both systems change and direct service work in varying amounts, proving that this work exists on a continuum.
Our evolving emphasis on systems change does not mean stepping back from supporting these vital organizations. Instead, we aim to ensure that organizations working to prevent harm and shift systems, which are often smaller, newer, or less visible, have a clearer path to being recognized and funded.
We are learning that what this looks like is a long and varied list. It includes driving policy changes and institutional practices, shifting power structures, advocacy work, elevating community-led solutions, and challenging existing narratives through public awareness to name a few.
Why does this matter? Because the current times are volatile. Urgent needs—budget cuts, policy rollbacks, and human rights under attack—make it easy to focus on reactive work. But we risk reinforcing inequitable systems if we don’t invest in solutions that also prevent harm before it starts. Supporting systems change means backing organizations that challenge structural injustice and work toward lasting transformation. It is preventative, equity-centered work that helps communities thrive over the long term.
TPC Leaders Take the Stage at the Philanos National Conference

Leaders from TPC made a strong impact at the recent “PowerUP! Texas” National Conference hosted by Philanos in Austin, Texas. This three-day gathering brought together women advancing change through collective giving—and TPC was proud to be well represented.
Past President Susan Benford moderated a session featuring Past President Leslie Levenson and current Co-President Jenny Morrison. Grant Co-Chair and part-time Administrator Amanda Klein presented on “The Next Generation: Recruiting, Engaging, and Retaining Young Philanthropists.” In addition, Sarah Rahman (former board member and current Education Co-Chair), Tracy Fink (Membership Committee Co-Chair), and Co-President Valerie Godhwani actively engaged as attendees—learning from peers and strengthening connections across the collective giving community.
Together, TPC’s presence reflected our commitment to learning, leadership, and collaboration in advancing philanthropy.

Grantee Highlights

A Home of Their Own — and a Beyond the Check Moment
This January, Young Man with a Plan, a four-time TPC grantee, officially purchased 1178 River Street in Hyde Park — securing a permanent home for their growing community of young men.
What began as a rental space required during the pandemic has evolved into a vibrant hub for mentorship, academic support, fitness, creative expression, and connection. With this purchase, YMWAP can now expand its college, career, and alumni programming — strengthening a safe, consistent space where young men have a stable place to belong, grow, and plan their futures.
TPC has been proud to partner with YMWAP during this growth — and this milestone is a powerful reminder that our impact extends beyond the check.
Long-time TPC member Jean Krasnow connected YMWAP to her husband, Jordan Krasnow — a retired partner at Goulston & Storrs — opening the door to pro bono legal support that provided critical professional expertise that brought this purchase across the finish line.
We’re proud to see how TPC’s community continues to strengthen the nonprofits we support — not just through grants, but through connection
